SWU Advances to NCCAA Championship

Box Score

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Southern Wesleyan men's soccer will play for their first National Championship after defeating Spring Arbor 2-1 in the NCCAA semifinals on Friday afternoon.

The Warriors (15-6-2) are making their second appearance in the title game – SWU lost to Union University 2-0 in 2003 – in their first appearance in the tournament since 2003.  Current head coach Camilo Rodriguez was a player during the last trip to the championship in 2003.

On Friday the Warriors did what they've done all tournament long, score first and hold on.  The 2-1 margin reflects the exact score of the two pool play matches the Warriors won earlier in the week, defeating Campbellsville and Houghton.  Although on this day the early goal didn't come until the second half.

Douglas Andrade scored both goals, the first coming in the 63rd minute.  Andrade headed in a pass from Juan Quintero for his 12th goal of the year.  His 13th came just four minutes later off a pass from Ivan Malagon.  Spring Arbor added their lone goal in the 86th minute as Michael Caccavo found the back of the net.

The Warriors will face former SSAC rival Lee University in Saturday's championship match at 3:45 p.m.  SWU is 4-5-1 against the Flames since 2004 with the last six meetings being decided by a single goal.  The Warriors have won the last two matches.
