How It Happened
Southern Wesleyan grabbed their first goal of the game early on as Dillon Bennett passed the ball over to Brody Schroeder. Schroeder was able to flick the ball in off the post and into the goal to give the Warriors the lead just under seven minutes into the match. The Warriors would not back down as Leonardo Flores, Sebastian Zumbado and Lucas Di Marco each went on the attack, but their shots each went just wide of the net. Shorter countered after twenty-six minutes of play as Shalom Akinbulumo scored the Hawks lone goal of the afternoon to equalize the score. A couple minutes later, Southern Wesleyan regained their lead. Michael Boyle crossed the ball over to Matias Garnier who quickly got it into the net to put the Warriors on top 2-1.
The Warriors continued their attacks on the net in the second half as Juan Daniel Rosales sent the ball toward the bottom right of the net. However, the Hawks goalkeeper, Zachary Lunceford, was there to collect the ball. Southern Wesleyan pushed on as Matias Garnier got the ball into the net for his second goal of the game. With nineteen minutes left of the clock, a lightning delay took both teams off the field for just over an hour and a half. As the lightening cleared, the Warriors came out stronger than ever. Garnier got the ball up the field to Brody Schroeder who got the ball into the net for the second time in the game. Seconds later, Gabriel Melendez crossed the ball over to Leonardo Flores. Flores tapped the ball into the goal to extend the Warriors lead to 5-1. The Hawks challenged with a shot off the foot of Matthew Molina, but Luke Bramblett collected the ball to keep Shorter from cutting into the Warriors advantage. Juan Daniel Rosales got set up for a corner kick and crossed the ball into the box. Matias Garnier was there to head the ball into the net and pick up his first collegiate hat trick. Southern Wesleyan went on to claim a 6-1 victory over Shorter.
