Southern Wesleyan Falls to Belmont Abbey

Belmont, NC – Southern Wesleyan dropped the conference match-up against the Belmont Abbey Crusaders on Saturday night.

The Warriors shot 35.3% from the field in the loss to the Crusaders.  Emily Waters led the team with 13 points.  She was followed by Denisha Hall with 11 points.  Waters and Lisana Burnett led the team with two assists each.  The Warriors recorded 22 rebounds with four posting three rebounds during the game.  Burnett led the team with four of the 11 steals of the game.  Both Waters and Burnett had blocks.

How It Happened

Belmont Abbey took the first two points of the game on free throws by Allie Downing.  They continued to push past the Warriors on three point baskets before a three pointer by Denisha Hall put Southern Wesleyan down 3-13 to Belmont Abbey.  The Warriors continued to chip away at the Crusaders lead on a second 3-pointer by Hall.  Despite baskets by Caroline Reese, the Crusaders led by 18 points at the end of the first quarter.

The Crusaders continued to pull away in the first half with baskets by Downing.  Southern Wesleyan broke Belmont Abbey's run with a jump shot by Emily Waters and layup by Lisana Burnett.  Despite a jump shot by Tanayja Williams, the Crusaders put up a layup by Keyanna Spivey to put the Warriors down thirty points.

Southern Wesleyan kick-offed the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Brooke Henricks and a layup by Emily Waters to put them down 23-53.  Allie Downing sunk a three pointer, but the Warriors continued to fight with baskets by Waters and Lisana Burnett.

Sydni Clawges jumped out for the Crusaders in the fourth quarter with a jump shot to give them a 33-69.  Belmont Abbey continued to push past Southern Wesleyan with six more points before Denisha Hall sunk a jump shot and a 3-pointer to put the Warriors down 38-75.  The Warriors continued to fight with shots by Emily Waters and Brooke Henricks.  Belmont Abbey went on to win the game 48-87.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain on the road as they travel to Due West, SC to take on the Erskine Flying Fleet on January 15 at 5:30 p.m.  They will then return home on January 18 to host the Barton Bulldogs at 2 p.m.  They will then host the University of Mount Olive Trojans on January 20 at 2 p.m.
