Warriors Unable to Pass Hurricanes in Double Overtime

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell in double overtime to the GA Southwestern Hurricanes in a 3-2 final score.

The Warriors put up 15 shots and six shots on goal in the loss in double overtime.  Ashley Romanowski led the team with six shots and two shots on goal.  Rachel Curtis also had two shots on goal in the loss.  Romanowski and Joy Namyst scored the lone goals for the Warriors.  Romanowski and Meo Owens each had assists.  Jen Golio played the whole game in goal and delivered 12 saves over the course of play.

How It Happened

Georgia Southwestern broke out of the gate early with shots by Ella Hawksin and Rachel Cochran, but the Warriors defense kept the ball from meeting the net.  The Warriors countered with shots by Ally Kisiel and Helen Schweiger, both missing the net.  The Hurricanes scored first with Ella Hawkins driving the ball into the net.  Southern Wesleyan would not go down quietly, as Meo Owens passed the ball up to Ashley Romanowski who took the ball into the net to tie the game 1-1.  Georgia Southwestern countered to take the lead 2-1 going into the half.

The Warriors started strong in the second half with shots by Ally Kisiel and Ashley Romanowski.  Southern Wesleyan continued to pressure Georgia Southwestern as Romanowski took a corner kick.  Rachel Curtis received the corner kick sent a header shot into the goal, but the Hurricanes goal keeper kept the ball from reaching the net.  The Warriors continued to put on the pressure with shots on goal by Romanowski and Charlie Brown.  Half way through the second half, Ashely Romanowski took a corner kick.  Joy Namyst took the kick from Romanowski and drove it into the net to tie the game 2-2 to force the game to go into overtime.

The Hurricanes charged onto the field in the first overtime period, but the Warriors countered and blocked each of their shots to force a second overtime period.  Despite a strong defense in the second half, Georgia Southwestern's Alison Rugel got the ball over Jen Golio's hand to win the game 3-2.

 

What's Next

The Warriors will remain at home on September 8 as they open up Conference Carolinas action as they take on the Lees-McRae Bobcats at 3 p.m.  They will then travel to Barton on September 15 to take on the Bulldogs at 1:30 p.m.
