Box Score KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Southern Wesleyan men's soccer team, seeded sixth in the NCCAA national tournament, won a 2-1 thriller over top seeded Southwestern Christian to go 2-0 in Pool A and assure a spot in the semifinals beginning Friday. Southern Wesleyan won its first round match on Tuesday 3-0 over Bethesda University and the Warriors are now 13-7-2 on the season. The semifinal berth is the team's second in three seasons as the 2013 team won both the regional and national championship.
"I am so proud of this group," said head coach Camilo Rodriguez. "We have faced adversity all year long, on and off the field, and it's so rewarding to see us come together as a team. I couldn't be prouder of all of our players, especially Joey Capone who scored the game winner!"
In the 27th minute of play the Eagles got on the board first with a goal from Jamie Campbell. The tying goal from the Warriors came off the foot of Christian Taylor in the 69th minute as the junior got the goalkeeper to come out one-on-one, the goalkeeper rejected his initial shot and Taylor cleaned up the ricochet to net his ninth goal of the season. Both Taylor and Michel Herszenhout lead the Warriors in goals scored this season.
In the 80th minute, the Warriors took the lead for good as senior Joey Capone netted a goal off a pass from Abraham Arredondo. The goal was the first of the season for Capone, a forward from Pickens, S.C. Capone scored on the same field with the same result for the 2013 team two seasons ago.
SWU returns to the field Friday for the semi-final match at 2 p.m. Opponent is still to be announced as games are still being played Wednesday night to determine winners from Pools B and C.
