SWU Men's Soccer holds off Spring Hill 1-0

Box Score

CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan men's soccer won their third straight on Friday evening, 1-0 over Spring Hill after rain poured on Childs Field for an hour prior to kick-off.

The Warriors (3-1) had a much tougher contest on Friday than their previous two that they won by a combined score of 12-0.  An early goal from Ivan Malagon held up as the sophomore netted hs second goal of the year.  Joao Oliveira sent a cross into the box from the left flank that Noel Fischer deflected over to the far post where Malagon was waiting to bury the ball in the net.

Spring Hill (0-2) had a couple of chances in the second half, the best might have been from Dylan Gardner who got behind SWU keeper Ruben Rodriguez but with a defender chasing down Gardner, was unable to strike the ball cleanly, pushing it wide right.  Gardner had another chance just eight minutes later in the 76th minute but missed his shot high.

Just seconds later a SWU foul just outside the 18-yard box gave the Badgers another great opportunity but back-to-back shots from Mario Escalante were blocked by the Warriors' wall.  SWU also had their opportunities to add to the lead, as Alejandro Sanchez hit the crossbar in the 80th minute and several other decent shots from distance went wide.

The Warriors took 14 of their 18 shots in the second half as the team started to take more chances from further out.  Spring Hill also took the majority of their shots in the second half, firing eight after halftime compared to just three in the first 45 minutes.

The match got a little chippy late as four cautions were handed out in a 13 minute span including three going against the Badgers.  Overall, 24 fouls were whistled in the match with 13 called on SWU.

The Warriors will wrap up their three-game home stand on Wednesday as they welcome in Columbia International at 7 p.m.
