Emmanuel tops Warriors in NCCAA Tourney

Box Score

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – A mere 10 hours after dropping their first game in the NCCAA Tournament the Southern Wesleyan Warriors were back on the floor against a familiar foe in Emmanuel College with the Lions getting the win 86-80.

Meeting for the fourth time this year, Emmanuel was able to even up the season series at 2-2 after the Warriors won last week in dramatic fashion in the South Region tournament.  The Warriors will close out the year in the 7th place game against the hosts from Grace College on Friday at 3 p.m. while Emmanuel will play in the 5th place game on Friday.

Briana Seda continued her strong performance in the tournament with 18 points off the bench as Chelsie Waters notched 19 to lead the team.  The lack of rest showed as the Warriors shot just 41 percent overall and made just 3 of 17 from beyond the arc.  SWU got to the free throw line often, taking 39 free throws and making 29, good for a 74 percent clip.

Emmanuel didn't shoot especially well either at 42 percent but managed to hit on 8 of 17 from long range and 26 of 39 from the charity stripe.  The Lions grabbed 20 offensive rebounds but only converted those into 15 second-chance points.  The Warriors were more efficient with 19 second-chance points off of 13 offensive rebounds.

"I was disappointed with our effort today," said head coach John Davis.  "We did not play at a championship level and it showed.  We gave up too many offensive rebounds and we did not shoot the ball well from the outside.  I hope we learn from today's game and finish our season on a high note tomorrow."

There were 10 lead changes and four ties, most coming early in the game as Emmanuel stayed on top most of the contest.  All four ties came in the first six minutes of the game with the final one coming at 12-12 with 13:59 remaining before the half.  After that the Lions went on a 5-0 run to seize control, leading for the next 10 minutes before the Warriors made a 7-0 run to take the lead at 28-27 with 4:11 to play.  Emmanuel responded and led by four, 36-32, at halftime.

In the second half Emmanuel pushed the lead out to 10 with a 12-6 start but the Warriors never gave up.  SWU fought back to take their only lead of the second half at 77-76 with 2:04 to go but Emmanuel's Michelle Wynn responded with a three on the ensuing possession to give the Lions the lead again and for good.

Kiara Coleman added 15 points for the Warriors and Christiana Perkins chipped in with 10.
