Box Score CENTRAL, S.C. – The Southern Wesleyan women came back in a big way on Monday night, rallying for a 70-64 win over Auburn-Montgomery in SSAC play. The game was rescheduled twice due to snow.
The Warriors (9-13, 6-9 SSAC) trailed by as much as 17 in the second half before embarking on a run to pick up the win. SWU established a 17-1 run over a five minute stretch to shrink the AUM (10-12, 5-9 SSAC) lead to one with 2:46 to play. The Warriors forced eight of AUM's 30 turnovers during that time. A basket by Kiara Coleman with 1:33 to play completed the comeback as the Warriors took a 63-62 lead.
"I am so proud of the team for not giving up and finishing," said head coach John Davis. "After Saturday's game we could have given up after AUM went up like they did, but seeing the resilience of our team today was pretty special. This is all about them and this group believing in the talents they have."
AUM built their lead early in the second half after the first half saw five lead changes and two ties. An early basket by Michelle Anaya off a turnover tied the game and provided a little foreshadowing for the end of the game. The Warhawks outscored the Warriors 26-9 through most of the half before the defense took over for SWU and put the Warriors back in the game.
Kiara Coleman was a force inside, scoring a team-high 15 points and grabbing eight rebounds. She was the primary reason why three AUM interior players fouled out and another had three fouls. The fouls were a big story in the game as AUM was whistled for 29 fouls and the Warriors for only eight. SWU shot 38 free throws in the game, making 26 as they continued to drive the ball to the basket. The Warhawks managed to make half of their six free throws.
In addition to Coleman, four other players reached double figures as the Warriors continue to show their balance scoring attack. Christiana Perkins added 13 points, 6 of 7 from the charity stripe, and Michelle Anaya added 12. Chelsie Waters and Brooke Strickland scored 11 each, Strickland's points accounted for all but one point from the bench. She also pulled down seven rebounds.
The Warriors shot only 35 percent in the game but were helped by those 30 turnovers from AUM. The Warhawks hit on 43 percent of their field goal attempts and made five of their seven treys after halftime.
These two teams will meet up again on Saturday in Montgomery. The win moves the Warriors into a tie for fifth in the SSAC East with Brenau, the last spot that makes the SSAC Tournament.
The Warriors won't get a break as they turn around and play Bob Jones at home on Tuesday at 5 p.m. SWU won the first meeting 72-63 in Greenville.
