MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Bruno Liozzi's goal in the 61st minute was all the Warriors needed to hold off Columbia International 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the NCCAA South Region Tournament on Wednesday morning.
The Warriors advance to the semifinals where they will meet the winner of Shorter who defeated Bob Jones 5-0. The tournament is being held at Chowan University.
Liozzi's team-leading ninth goal of the season came just after a foul on the Rams. The ball was quickly restarted and Liozzi found himself wide open from about 25 yards out and sent a strike that beat keeper Stephen Replogle to the far post.
The Warriors (12-6) were the aggressor all morning long, taking 24 shots to just eight for Columbia International (10-6-3). The Warriors put eight shots on target led by Liozzi's three. Ruben Rodriguez made three saves to earn his sixth shutout of the season and the seventh time the Warriors have not allowed a goal this season.
SWU is the defending champion of this tournament, having won last year's event at Emmanuel College. The Warriors entered the tournament this year as the three seed with Palm Beach Atlantic (one seed), Shorter (two seed), Chowan (four seed), Emmanuel (five seed) and Bob Jones (seven seed) also taking part.
Thursday's first semifinal will kick-off at 11:30 a.m. between the Warriors and Hawks with the winner of Chowan-Emmanuel meeting Palm Beach Atlantic in the second semifinal. The championship match is slated for Friday at 1 p.m.
