CENTRAL, S.C. – Three second-half goals sent Southern Wesleyan men's soccer to their first loss since Sept. 24 as Limestone stayed unbeaten in Conference Carolinas with a 3-0 victory over the Warriors.
The loss snaps a four-match winning streak for SWU, tying a season-high. Limestone rolled into the match ranked No.12 in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tires NCAA Division II Poll with only one loss on the season. The Saints scored three times in the second half including the first two within a minute of each other.
The Warriors (8-4, 2-3 CC) were shutout for the third time this season, all three times coming in conference matches, twice at home. This is also the third time the Warriors have allowed three or more goals in a match.
The Saints (10-1, 6-0 CC) kept SWU keeper Ruben Rodriguez busy all night long as Rodriguez was forced to make eight saves in the match. Limestone's Tom Godfrey made five stops in net for the Saints. Six of Rodriguez's saves came in the second half as Limestone took 14 total shots after intermission. The Warriors were able to get away just four shots in the second half after outshooting the Saints 7-6 in the first half.
Limestone finally broke through in the 69th minute, firing off three shots from inside the six-yard box, the first two were saved by Rodriguez but finally Harry Cooksley put the ball in the net. Just a minute later after a foul set up a free kick on the left wing, Sam Orritt scored to put the Saints up 2-0.
Cooksley added another goal in the 81st minute to put the game out of reach for the Warriors, then the game got chippy as three cards were shown in the final seven minutes. Two of those cards cost the Warriors a player as Alejandro Sanchez was shown a red and Bruno Liozzi was also shown a red after his second caution. In total the game saw 10 cards shown.
The Warriors will be without Liozzi and Sanchez on Wednesday as Erskine comes to town for a 7 p.m. match.
