Box Score CENTRAL, S.C. – Three players scored for the first time in 2013 as Southern Wesleyan women's soccer picked up their first win of the year, 3-1 over Erskine College on Thursday night.
The Warriors (1-1-1) scored first as Brittany Woodhouse found the back of the net in the 43rd minute off a free kick from 25 yards out for her first goal as a Warrior. Goalkeeper Krista Anonie and the Warrior defense held off a charge by the Flying Fleet (0-1) as Erskine took eight shots in the first half. SWU managed just three total.
Leah Moorefield added her first career goal in the 59th minute and Grace Taylor added her first just three minutes later to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead. Taylor got loose behind the back line and beat goalkeeper Ashton Burgess who had come off her line, but Taylor's initial shot hit the post. Katie Aldrich was there to knock the ball back in front of the goal as Taylor punched it in.
Jamie Morris scored the lone goal for Erskine in the 68th minute as the Flying Fleet turned up the pressure in the final 25 minutes. Morris hit the post earlier in the half. As Erskine tried to fight back there was a non-foul call in the box and due to the no call Erskine head coach Gary Winchester was shown a red card for arguing the play.
Despite the final tally of 24 shots there were not many dangerous opportunities either way as evidenced by the total of four saves. Most shots were taken from outside the 18-yard box. Erskine was credited with 13 shots and led by Morris' six, including three on goal. Grace Taylor took five shots off the bench for the Warriors. Krista Anonie made three stops between the posts for the Warriors.
SWU will be in action on the road this Saturday as they make the short trip to Tigerville, SC to battle North Greenville University at 1 p.m.
