Agudelo Lifts Warriors Over Badgers

Box Score

CENTRAL, S.C. – Juan Agudelo provided the heroics as the Warriors defeated Spring Hill in double-overtime on Friday night.

The sophomore from Colombia found himself in the right place at the right time, firing a shot from 20 yards out that was deflected off a Spring Hill player, changed direction and beat the keeper in the 107th minute.  The goal was the first for Agudelo on the season.  The goal came on the heels of Richie Barbetty being sent off for receiving a second cautionable offence.

The Warriors (4-3-1, 1-2-0 SSAC) picked up their first win in conference play and remain unbeaten in three matches at home this year.  Spring Hill falls to 4-5-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the SSAC.

SWU had plenty of chances on this night, taking 23 shots compared to 13 for the Badgers.  The Warriors had a chance with just four seconds left in regulation and a free kick from outside the 18.  Alejandro Sanchez found himself 1-v-1 with the keeper but put the ball in the keeper's chest for a save and to force overtime.  Earlier in the match, Jonathan Ruiz hit the post.

The Warriors placed 11 shots on target, led by Sanchez's three.  Sanchez took a match-high six shots overall.  Patrick Culotta took five shots and put three on target for the Badgers.

Spring Hill had several great opportunities as well, as they hit the post in the first half.  Ruben Rodriguez was the main reason why the Badgers didn't walk away with goals of their own.  Rodriguez made six saves but several came on 1-v-1 chances and performed well in the air, coming out to knock away free kicks.  Rodriguez earned his second shutout of the season.

The Warriors have a quick turnaround as they host the University of Mobile, the 11th ranked team in the NAIA, on Saturday at 7 p.m.  The Rams were upset, 3-1, against Emmanuel on Friday.
