Box Score HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Wesleyan's comeback bid was spoiled in a 3-1 loss to William Carey in both team's Southern States Athletic Conference opener.
The Warriors fell behind 1-0 just 1:33 into the second half as Helge Pietschmann netted his first goal of the match off an assist from Thilo Koerperich. SWU fought back to tie the match at 1-1 as Douglas Andrade scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Juan Quintero picked up the assist on the goal in the 79th minute.
Just like that the Warriors went from a tie match and 10 minutes from overtime to down by a goal again. Pietschmann notched his second goal of the match just over two minutes after the Warriors tied it up. The Crusaders (4-2-1, 1-0 SSAC) scored again in the 89th minute as Miguel Izquierdo found the back of the net.
SWU out-shot WCU on the night, 17-10. The Crusaders were able to put more shots on goal, 8-7. The Warriors took 10 of their 17 shots in the second as they tried to catch the Crusaders.
Southern Wesleyan will head to Belhaven to play the defending national champions and current sixth-ranked team in the NAIA. The match is scheduled for an 8 p.m. kick-off and will follow the Blazers football game and the women's soccer match.
