Box Score LAURINBURG, N.C. - Southern Wesleyan University men's soccer picked up a 3-1 win over St. Andrews University on Wednesday night in the season opener for both teams.
The Warriors-ranked No. 21 in the NAIA preseason poll-took a 1-0 lead into the break as Douglas Andrade scored just seven minutes after stepping on the pitch as a first-half substitute.
Andrade netted two more goals in the second half, one in the 59th minute and the final one in the 82nd minute. The hat-trick is the second in Andrade's career with the first coming in last year's season opener at Bob Jones. St. Andrews scored their lone goal just five minutes into the second half as Caio Lima beat SWU keeper Ruben Rodriguez.
"We started with a win which is important but we need to improve in all aspects of the game," said head coach Camilo Rodriguez.
The Warriors out-shot the Knights 14-8 in the match. Andrade led all players with five shots including four on frame. Ruben Rodriguez made three saves for the Warriors and Leandro Custodio made five for SAU.
Southern Wesleyan will open the home portion of their schedule on Saturday (8/31) as they host Bob Jones University at 7 p.m.
