Warriors Comeback Falls Short Against North Greenville

Box Score

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan women's basketball dropped their fourth straight on Saturday, falling to North Greenville University 78-76 after missing two shots in the final minute that would have tied or given the Warriors the lead.

The Warriors (2-6) took the early lead, not showing signs of a 21-day layoff between games.  North Greenville seized the lead at 8-6 but the Warriors took it back at 14-12 with 11:52 to play.  The final nine minutes of the first half belonged to NGU as they pushed their lead out to as much as 10 at 33-23. SWU fought back to retake the lead with a minute to go in the half as Kiara Coleman's bucket gave the Warriors a 36-35 lead but the teams went into halftime with the Lady Crusaders ahead 37-36.

The lead changed hands four times in the first 1:18 of the second half before NGU seized the lead for good at 41-40 with 18:42 to play.  The Warriors had chances in the final minute after a three by Chelsie Waters cut the deficit down from five to two at 78-76.  After a Crusader turnover gave the Warriors possession with 34 seconds to play, SWU missed two shots inside the final 15 seconds to give NGU the victory.

Coleman led all players with 24 points and 13 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season.  Three more players joined Coleman in double figures as Christiana Perkins added 16 points, nine rebounds and six assists.  Cayse Branyon and Michelle Anaya each scored 12.

The Warriors shot 45-percent from the floor in the game and NGU also made 45-percent of their field goal attempts.  Neither team was very effective from outside the arc as the Warriors made just 4-of-13 and the Crusaders just 3-of-13.  SWU made four of their seven free throw attempts while NGU was 9-of-11.

"I'm proud of the way our team played today," said SWU head coach John Davis.  "We made some mistakes, but we have pushed the team hard over the last three weeks and we were able to see improvement.  We were resilient today against a quality North Greenville team and we need to keep pushing forward."

The Warriors are back in action at home on Monday against Columbia (S.C.) at 2 p.m.
