Oliveira Golden As Warriors Upend No. 7 Warhawks

Box Score

CENTRAL, S.C. – Another night of soccer and another dramatic finish for the Southern Wesleyan Warriors, as they defeated the No. 7 Warhawks from Auburn-Montgomery 2-1 in overtime.

Joao Oliveira delivered the dramatic game-winner just 43 seconds into overtime as Bruno Liozzi found him streaking down the middle and Oliveira beat the keeper.  Oliveira has scored three goals in the last two games, his third giving the Warhawks (11-5, 8-1 SSAC) their first conference loss of the season.

The Warriors (8-4-2, 5-3-1 SSAC) have won four in a row and are unbeaten in their last five.  SWU improves their placement in the SSAC and trails Martin Methodist by just three points for the fourth spot and the opportunity to host a first round tournament game.

Douglas Andrade scored his team-leading eighth goal just 2:12 into the first half to open the scoring.  Andrade picked up a deflected ball after AUM's keeper came out to the top of the 18 to deflect the ball and fired it from distance into the back of the open net.

AUM was finally able to answer early in the second half as a beautiful through ball from Vitor Silva found Alan Harwell in behind the SWU defense where Harwell beat Ruben Rodriguez.  Rodriguez made two saves and owned his box as he returned to action after sitting out Friday night.  His counterpart, Vignir Johannesson made six saves as the Warriors controlled the ball in their offensive third most of the night.

The Warriors played the final 30 minutes up one man after Mathis Kroeger was issued a red card for kicking a SWU player as they both lied on the ground.  AUM was still able to create some chances after that but unable to find the game-winner, that went to Oliveira.

SWU will travel to Brewton-Parker on Wednesday before returning home to host Southern Poly on Saturday on senior day.  That game has been selected as the NAIA Game of the Week presented by Tourbeau Sports and the NSCAA.  The first round of the SSAC tournament to be held on campus sites will be held on Nov. 9.
