Canelos Lifts Warriors to Victory

Box Score

CENTRAL, S.C. – Raul Canelos provided the game-winner with 12 seconds left as the Warriors defeated Faulkner 5-4 in a wild match on Friday night.

Canelos entered the match as a sub late in the second half but found himself at the right place at the right time.  With the clock winding down and a wild, back-and-forth match tied-up at 4-4, Juan Quintero fired a cross into the box that Canelos ran onto and knocked into the back of the net with just 12 seconds remaining.

Faulkner (3-10-1, 2-6-0 SSAC) held a 3-2 lead at the break, scoring two of their three goals when a player got behind the SWU (7-4-2, 4-3-1 SSAC) defense.  In fact the Eagles were efficient all night, scoring four times on seven total shots.  Kofi Forkuoh notched two goals.

Forkuoh's second goal gave the Eagles a 4-3 lead early in the second half, right after Quintero tied the match with his goal.  Alejandro Sanchez scored just over a minute after Forkuoh to tie the match at 4-4.  That capped a furious run of three goals in five mintues.

Joao Oliveira scored the first two goals for the Warriors, notching the first in the 15th minute and the second in the 25th to give SWU a 2-1 lead.  Martin Mutanda scored on a corner kick to tie the match at 2-2 before Forkuoh scored his first of the night to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead with just eight seconds left in the half.

The Warriors took an astounding 24 shots in the match, led by eight from Douglas Andrade.  Andrade didn't find the back of the net but did provide two assists on the night.

SWU will host No. 7 Auburn-Montgomery on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Homecoming coronation ceremonies will be held at halftime of the game.
