Warriors Unable to Pass Jaguars on the Road

Augusta, GA – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Augusta Jaguars in non-conference action in an 8-4 final on Wednesday evening.

The Warriors totaled five hits in the loss to the Jaguars.  Ethan Shimmel led the team with three of the four RBIs.  Southern Wesleyan walked seven times and stole five bases.  Tristan Tillman led the team with three stolen bases.  Behind him, both Nolan Evatt and Shimmel stole one base each.

Britton Ellenberg started the game on the mound for the Warriors.  He was followed by six Warriors in relief.  Caleb Gregory picked up four strikeouts.  Both Mason Clark and Luke Weldon also recorded a strikeout in the game.

How It Happened

Southern Wesleyan was first on the board in the top of the first inning.  Tristan Tillman led off the inning with a walk and then stole second base.  Nolan Evatt followed by grounding out to allow Tillman to advance to third.  With Tillman ninety feet from home, Ethan Shimmel ground out to first base to allow Tillman to come in to score the first run of the game.

Augusta countered as back-to-back wild pitches brought both Cowart and Go in to score to give the Jaguars the lead.  The Jaguars brought a couple more runs in to score in the inning to extend their lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Jaguars extended their lead to 6-1 after an error in centerfield brought two more runs in to score.  They continued to extend their lead as they brought another run in to score in the bottom of the sixth.

Southern Wesleyan cut into Augusta's lead in the top of the seventh inning.  Ethan Jarvis led off the inning by reaching on a walk.  He then advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Tristan Tillman walked.  With two on, Nolan Evatt came up to bat and ground out to first to allow both Jarvis and Tillman to advance ninety feet.  Ethan Shimmel came up to the plate and sent the ball into right field for a single that allowed both Jarvis and Tillman to come in to score.  Shimmel went on to steal second, and then both Josh Long and Kade Bowling were hit by pitches to load up the bases.  Matthew McCaffrey walked to bring in the Warriors fourth run of the game.

The Jaguars regained their four run advantage in the bottom of the seventh as a hit by Cowart allowed Martin to come in to score.  Augusta went on to win the game in an 8-4 final score.

 

 

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will open up Conference Carolinas action on February 13-14 as they take on the Young Harris Mountain Lions in Young Harris, GA.  They will then travel to Milledgeville, GA to take on the Georgia College Bobcats on February 18.  The Warriors will host the King Tornado on February 20-21.
