Columbia, SC – The Warriors took top finishes at the John Hunter Classic over the weekend with Merritt Smith breaking the school record in the 5000 meters.

Track Results

100m: In the preliminaries of the 100 meters, Makayla Wilson took second with a time of 12.14 to qualify for the finals.  Wilson went on to finish in third place in the finals with a time of 12.20.

100mh: In the preliminaries of the 100 meter hurdles, TraVon Lay took first with a time of 14.81 to advance to the finals.  In the finals of the race, Lay finished in the second with a time of 15.32.

200m: Makayla Wilson led the whole field in the 200 meters as she took first place with a time of 26.10.  Sophomore Cianna Laginestra finished in 15^th with a time of 28.21.

400m: The Warriors were led by Amariah Davis in the 400 meters as her time of 1:05.81 allowed her to take 11^th.

400mh: TraVon Lay finished in fifth with time of 1:11.83.

800m: Kristi Gallagher took seventh with a time of 2:32.90.  Ava LaBrant and Macey Morgan were the next two Warriors to finish.  LaBrant took 11^th with a time of 2:36.28 and Morgan took 12^th with a time of 2:37.26.  Taking 29^th was Janey Dixon who finished with a time of 2:47.71.  She was followed by Freda Ruiz who took 31^st with a time of 2:48.39.  Nicole Feagan wrapped up the field for the Warriors as she took 39^th with a time of 3:12.84.

1500: Merritt Smith took fourth in the 1500 meters as she finished with a time of 5:05.60.  Smith was followed by Macey Morgan and Kristi Gallagher.  Morgan took ninth with a time of 5:18.31 and Gallagher took 10^th with a time of 5:19.51.  Divinity Ervin took 14^th with a time of 5:31.51.  Janey Dixon wrapped up the field for the Warriors as she took 17^th with a time of 5:44.12.

5000m: In the 5000 meters, Merritt Smith broke the school record as she took third place with a time of 18:31.51.

Field Results

Javelin: Layla-Gray Bennett led the Warriors in the javelin as she took third place after her throw of 33.25m.  Bennet was closely followed by Alexandria Luther who finished in fourth place after her throw of 31.38m.

Hammer: In the hammer throw, Alexandria Luther finished in second place with a throw of 37.99 meters.

Shot Put: Alexandra Luther took fifth in the shot put after she threw 10.24 meters.

Discus: Taking sixth place in the discus, Layla-Gray Bennett threw 32.59 meters.  She was followed by Alexandria Luther who took eighth with a throw of 30.86 meters.

Long Jump: In the long jump, Elana Juarez took 15^th with a jump of 4.33 meters.

Pole Vault: Ava LaBrant led the field in the pole vault as she cleared 2.90 meters to take first.

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will travel to Montreat, NC on March 21-22 to compete in the Montreat College Open.  The Warriors will host their second meet of the 2025 season on March 28-29 as they welcome teams to Central, SC and the Joe R Gilbert Track and Field Complex for the Gotta Run Invite.  The Warriors compete in the Electric City Invitational in Anderson, SC on April 4-5.
