Mitchem, Haddock Homer as Warriors Drop Series to Mountain Lions

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan dropped both games against Young Harris on Saturday afternoon.  The Warriors dropped game in a 13-3 final score before falling in game two in a 20-8 final.

The Warriors recorded eight hits in game one with Gage Shaver leading the team with three.  Cam Mitchem had the lone RBI.  Southern Wesleyan walked two times and Jason Culley stole a base.  Nick Vollmert started on the mound and pitched three innings while striking out four batters. 

Southern Wesleyan had fourteen hits in the second game of the afternoon.  Blayze Haddock led the team with three hits.  Both Cam Mitchem and Haddock each had home runs.  Mitchem had four of the eight RBIs.  Behind Mitchem, Gage Shaver had two RBIs.  Jack Dennison had the lone walk and Haddock had the lone stolen base.  Christopher Hund pitched four innings and struck out four.  The other strikeout came out of the hands of Kyle Dixon.

How It Happened

Game One

Gage Shaver led off the bottom of the first inning with a single up the middle.  He advanced to second as Cam Mitchem walked.  Back-to-back passed balls allowed Shaver to come in to score and put Mitchem on second base.  Marty Grisso ground out to shortstop to allow Mitchem to advanced to third.  Jarrett Whitley hit a sacrifice fly out to left field to bring Mitchem in to score to give the Warriors a 2-0 run lead.

The lead was short lived as a double by Basham allowed Young Harris to take a 3-2 run lead in the top of the second inning.

Young Harris pushed on with runs in the top of the third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings to extend their lead to 13-2.

The Warriors fought back in the bottom of the seventh inning.  With two outs, Blayze Haddock hit a single up the middle and then advanced to second as Gage Shaver singled to right center.  Cam Mitchem hit a single to left field to bring Haddock in to score.  However, they dropped the game in a 13-3 run final score.

 

 

Game Two

Young Harris pushed ahead early in the final game of the series as they plated seven runs between the top of the first and second innings.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Warriors countered the Mountain Lions attacks.  Jason Culley reached first on an error and then advanced to second when Blayze Haddock hit a single through the right side.  Clay Porter ground out to move both runners up ninety feet.  With two outs, Gage Shaver hit a single to center field to bring both Haddock and Culley in to score.

The Mountain Lions brought another run in to score in the top of the fourth inning.

Blayze Haddock led off the fourth inning by drilling the ball over the center field wall for his first home run of the season.  The Warriors were not done as they brought two more runs in to score in the inning.  Clay Porter followed with a single to left field then advanced to second on a single through the left side by Derek Franics.  Gage Shaver hit a single to first base to load up the bases for Zachary Kim.  Kim hit a sacrifice fly out to bring Porter in to score.  Another sacrifice fly, this time to center field by first baseman Cam Mitchem, allowed another run to come in to put the Warriors behind the Mountain Lions 8-5.

A wild pitch allowed another run to come in to score to extend their lead to 9-5.

Southern Wesleyan attacked the plate once again in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Derek Francis hit a single to left field and then advanced to third on a single by Zachary Kim.  With two out, Cam Mitchem hit a single to center field to put the Warriors back within three.

In the top of the eighth inning, a single by Wilson allowed Young Harris to extend their lead to 10-6.

The Warriors were not done as they brought two more runs in to score in the bottom of the eighth.  With two outs, Zachary Kim hit a single to right field.  With one on and two outs, Cam Mitchem hit the ball over the left field fence for a home run that brought Kim in to score.

Young Harris plated ten more runs in the top of the ninth to win the game in a 20-8 run final.

 

 

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will travel to Mars Hill, NC on April 16 to take on the Mars Hill Lions.  They will then return to Dr. C Keith Connor Field on April 19-20.  The Warriors will travel to Pembroke, NC on April 26-27 as they host the UNC Pembroke Braves.
