Warriors Challenge Cobras in Non-Conference Action

Hartsville, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell in non-conference action to the Coker Cobras in a 17-12 final score on Monday afternoon.

The Warriors took 27 shots and had 22 shots on goal during the loss.  Amy Pfefferkorn led the team with five shots on goal.  She was followed by Kelsey Hawkins, Jocelyn Cosgrove and Tabitha Beecher followed with four shots on goal.  Hawkins and Cosgrove led the team with three goals apiece.  Hawkins continue to impress as she posted two of the four assists.  Jairy Sandoval recorded 11 of the 19 draw controls.  Southern Wesleyan had 16 ground balls with Hawkins leading the team with three.  The Warriors caused 12 turnovers.  Kaeleigh McDaniel collected seven saves during the game.

How It Happened

Southern Wesleyan attacked early as Amy Pfefferkorn took a shot on the goal, but Olivia Fladung kept the Warriors from taking an early lead.  Coker countered as Meagan Gallagher scored the first goal of the game for the Cobras to put them ahead 1-0.  The Warriors continued to challenge as Skylar Taylor and Pfefferkorn took shots on the goal, but neither could capitalize.  The Cobras lengthened their lead to 2-0 on a second goal by Gallagher.  The Warriors maintained the pressure and it finally it paid off as Kelsey Hawkins passed the ball up to Betsy Bovee who drilled it into the cage to put the Warriors down 1-3.  Coker countered with a goal of their own, but then a free position goal by Pfefferkorn and a goal by Hawkins put the Warriors within one goal of the Cobras.  However, Coker regained their three goal advantage with goals by Hannah Shuren and Ansley Wallace.  Despite a goal by Tabitha Beecher, the Cobras maintained a 9-4 lead at the half.

The Warriors attacked early with a shot by Amy Pfefferkorn, but Abby Kellner saved the ball from the cage.  The Cobras took a six goal advantage on a free position goal by Hannah Shuren.  Goals by Betsy Bovee and Kelsey Hawkins allowed the Warriors to stay within five goals of the Cobras.  Coker regained the pressure as Makenzie Stroup and Alexis Zegan scored back-to-back goals.  However, the Warriors would not be discouraged as Tabitha Beecher scored her second goal of the game to put the Warriors within six goals of the Cobras.  Southern Wesleyan kept pushing the ball as Skylar Taylor passed the ball to Hawkins who put it in the cage, and then Taylor put the ball into the goal immediately after to put the Warriors within five of Coker.  However, the Cobras fought right back as they put three goals on the board in a row to take a 17-9 goal advantage over the Warriors.  Despite Jocelyn Cosgrove putting the Warriors into double digits as she scored three goals back-to-back, the Cobras won the game 17-12.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will continue their Spring Break trip as they travel to Florida to take on Palm Beach Atlantic on March 11 at 7 p.m.  They will remain on the road on March 14 as they travel up to Wilson, NC to resume Conference Carolinas action against the Barton Bulldogs.  The Warriors will then return to Central, SC to host the Belmont Abbey Crusaders on March 17 at 4 p.m.
