Late Rally Not Enough to Give Warriors Victory

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan dropped a tough competition against the University of Virginia – Wise Cavaliers on Friday evening in a 6-5 final score.

The Warriors recorded nine hits in the loss to the Cavaliers.  Timo Schau, Parker Pillsbury and Tanner Glass led the team with two hits apiece.  Pillsbury and Glass continued to lead the Warriors in RBIs as each recorded two.  Ty King Richards had the lone sacrifice bunt and stolen base for the Warriors.  Schau had the lone walk of the afternoon for Southern Wesleyan and five Warriors were left on base during the game.

Southern Wesleyan had three pitchers come to the mound during the game.  TJ McEvilly started the first game of the three game series.  McEvilly pitched three innings before Vinny Adams came in to pitch in relief.  Adams led the team with three strikeouts while pitching five innings and only allowing one run.  Laython McLean closed out the game for the Warriors, striking out two over one inning pitched.

How It Happened

The University of Virginia – Wise attacked early, plating two runs in the top of the first and then extended their lead in the top of the third to take a 5-0 lead over Southern Wesleyan.

Southern Wesleyan challenged in the bottom of the third inning.  With one out, Sean Sutay singled through the left side, but then a fielder's choice pulled Sutay off the bases and put Ty King Richards at first.  King Richards stole second base and then Timo Schau walked to put two on and two out.  Parker Pillsbury came up to bat and singled and then advanced to second on an error.  The play allowed by King Richards and Schau to come in and score.  A passed ball allowed Pillsbury to move up 90 feet.  With Pillsbury in scoring position, Tanner Glass singled to short stop to put the Warriors down 5-3.

The Cavaliers scored again in the top of the fourth, but the Warriors would not be discouraged as they attacked in the bottom of the fifth inning.  With two out, Timo Schau singled to left field and then advanced to second base as Parker Pillsbury reached first on an error.  With two on and two out, Tanner Glass singled down the left field line to bring Schau home and put the Warriors down 6-4.

The Warriors continued to chip away at the Cavaliers lead in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Sean Sutay reached first on a dropped third strike and passed ball and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ty King Richards.  With a runner in scoring position, Timo Schau singled to right field and allowed Sutay to advance to third.  Parker Pillsbury hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Sutay to come in to score.  However, the rally was late as the Warriors dropped the game 6-5.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will conclude the three game series against the University of Virginia – Wise Cavaliers on February 15 at noon and three p.m.  They will then travel to Dahlonega, GA to take on the North Georgia Nighthawks.  Southern Wesleyan will remain on the road as they open up Conference Carolinas action against the Emmanuel Lions on February 21-22.
