Coach Morrell says…
"Great effort today, a lot of things we did really well, had some great moments, but had too many little mistakes and moments where we switched off. Proud of the effort, we were in this game until late when it got away from us, but happy for how we battled."
How It Happened
The Belmont Abbey Crusaders challenged the Warriors early on with several shots on goal, but Jen Golio kept the Crusaders back. However, the Crusaders continued to threaten and Allyson Elliott took a pass from Tallee Zamiela to score the first goal of the game and put Belmont Abbey on top 1-0. Southern Wesleyan would not be stopped though as Halen Schweiger passed the ball up to Ashley Romanowski to get it in the net and tie the game 1-1. Just two minutes later, Joy Namyst broke away and took a shot from the far right side to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead. The Crusaders continued to take multiple shots on goal and finally one got through to tie the game 2-2. Belmont Abbey went on to score one more goal before the end of the first period of play and lead 3-2.
Southern Wesleyan continued to fight as Sarah Baldwin and Rachel Curtis each received corner kicks from Ashley Romanowski to challenge Belmont Abbey. However, the Crusaders goalkeeper Lauryn Harding kept the ball out of the net to maintain the lead. Belmont Abbey continued to pressure Jen Golio and the Warriors defense, scoring two more goaols to give them a 5-2 lead. The Warriors tried to fight back with shots on goal by Ashley Romanowski and Makala Latsch, but they could not pass the Crusaders.
