Warriors Fall in Heartbreaker to Bears

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell in a heartbreaker to the Truett-McConnell in a 12-10 final on Tuesday evening.

The Warriors recorded 10 hits in the loss to the Bears.  Steven Perez and Noah Fritz led the team with two hits apiece.  Quinton Bent boasted a home run, while Fritz doubled during the game.  Three Warriors posted three RBIs during the loss, and Devin Patrick came in to score three runs.  Jesse Getford and Patrick led the team with two walks apiece during the game.

Southern Wesleyan posted nine strikeouts during the game.  Kyle Cook-McCrary started his first game of the season and went 3.2 innings while striking out three.  Josh Antwine, Aaron Bennett and Josh Core came in to pitch in relief for the Warriors.  Antwine led the team with four strikeouts.

How It Happened

Truett-McConnell attacked first in the top of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead.  However, the Warriors countered in the bottom of the third inning.  Devin Patrick led off with a walk and then advanced to second on a single by Steven Perez.  Noah Fritz followed with a single to left field to bring Patrick in to tie the game 1-1.  A single up the middle by John Garrett brought Perez in.  Garrett went on to advance to second to put both runners in scoring position and bring Izzy Martinez up to bat.  Martinez singled through the right side to bring both Garrett and Fritz in to put Southern Wesleyan on top 4-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Southern Wesleyan extended their lead.  Devin Patrick led off with a walk and then advanced to second when Steven Perez was hit by a pitch.  John Garrett was hit in the helmet to load up the bases and bring Izzy Martinez up.  Martinez hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Patrick to score, but got Garrett out at second base.  With runners at the corners, Quinton Bent hit a home run to left center field to put Southern Wesleyan on top 8-3.

Southern Wesleyan took a 10-3 run advantage in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Jesse Getford walked and then advanced to second on a single by Devin Patrick.  With two runners on Noah Fritz doubled to left field to bring Getford and Patrick in.

The Bears slowly chipped away at the Warriors lead, and then in the top of the eighth, Truett-McConnell put up five runs to tie the game 10-10.  The Bears went on to win the game in a 12-10 final score.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain at home as they take on the Anderson Trojans on April 4.   They will then travel to Limestone on April 6-7 to take on the Saints in Conference Carolinas action.
