Cobras Shut Down Warriors

Hartsville, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Coker Cobras in double header action on Saturday afternoon in final scores of 6-1 and 10-2.

The Warriors had five hits in the game one loss to the Cobras.  Becca White and Makaila Irby led the team with two hits apiece.  Irby went on to record the only RBI for the Warriors and Lexi Thompson had the only run.  Three Warriors walked in the loss.  Josie Edwards pitched a complete game for the Warriors, allowing seven hits while striking out two batters.

Southern Wesleyan posted two hits in game two. The lone hits came off the bats of Maddie Ward and Josie Edwards.  Grace McGuffin and Lexi Thompson had the lone runs for the Warriors.  Five Warriors walked in the loss, with Makaila Irby leading the team with two walks.  Kali Berrigan and Mariah Foxworth both posted stolen bases in the loss.  Hunter Hoskins pitched 4.2 innings for the Warriors in game two.

"We didn't get the results we wanted, but I feel like the problems we have are correctable.  We will continue to focus on getting better each and every day.  The great thing is we will get a chance to have a great week of practice and come back next weekend and compete again."

 

How It Happened

Game One

The Cobras attacked hard in the first inning of play, scoring five runs to take a 5-0 lead over the Warriors.  Coker scored again in the bottom of the third inning to extend their lead to 6-0.

Southern Wesleyan countered in the top of the sixth inning.  Lexi Thompson led off the inning with a double to left field.  Thompson went on and advanced to third base on a passed ball.  Makaila Irby singled to center field to bring Thompson home and score the lone run for the Warriors.  The Cobras won game one 6-1.

Game Two

Coker took the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning on a single by High to bring Williamso home and give them a 1-0 lead over Southern Wesleyan.  The Cobras pushed ahead to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.

Southern Wesleyan countered in the top of the fourth inning.  Lexi Thompson led off the inning by reaching first on an error and then advanced to second on the error.  Makaila Irby walked and then Grace McGuffin came in to pinch run for her.  Maddie Ward followed Irby's walk by a single up the middle to advance Thompson and McGuffin up a base pad each.  A fielder's choice allowed Megan New to take first and advanced McGuffin to third and Thompson came home, however Ward was out at second on the play.  Kali Berrigan came in to pinch run for New.  Berrigan then stole second to get in scoring position.  Natalie Johnson followed with a walk to load up the bases.  Mariah Foxworth grounded out to second to move the runners over and bring McGuffin home to put the Warriors down 6-2 to the Cobras.

Coker pushed their lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning.  The Cobras continued their push in the bottom of the fifth inning to win the game 10-2.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will next take part in the Lander Bearcat Classic on February 9 and 10.
