Southern Wesleyan Unable to Rise Above Mount Olive

Central, S.C. – Warriors fall in sweep by the Mount Olive Trojans in Conference Carolinas competition on April 8.  The Trojans took game 9-0 and game two in a 10-4 final.

Southern Wesleyan posted four hits in game one, with four Warriors each posting a hit.  Justin Brew doubled during the game for the lone extra base hit for Southern Wesleyan.  Freshman Josh Antwine started game one and went five innings while striking out three and throwing 106 pitches with fifty-seven strikes.

The Warriors had seven hits in game two, with John Garrett leading the way with two hits.  Conner Ewing led the team in home runs with one to give him four in the season.  Quinton Bent and Garrett both doubled during the game.  Four Warriors posted RBIs in the loss to the Trojans.  Garrett hit a sacrifice fly and Christian Ketchup stole the lone base for Southern Wesleyan.  JJ Julian started game two, going five innings and striking out two batters during the loss.

How It Happened

Game One:

The Trojans led off game one with a home run to right center to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning and went on to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a home run by Sherrill in the second inning.  Three home runs later, Mount Olive won game one in a 9-0 final over Southern Wesleyan.

 

Game Two:

The Trojans struck first once again in game two to take a 2-0 lead over the Warriors.  However, Southern Wesleyan countered in the bottom of the second inning.  Conner Ewing led off the inning with a home run over the left field wall to cut the Trojans lead in half.  Quinton Bent followed with a double to right center.  Christian Ketchup singled to right center to bring Bent home and tie the game for the Warriors.

However, Mount Olive lengthened their lead in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead over Southern Wesleyan.  They lengthened it to 5-2 in the top of the fifth inning.  Southern Wesleyan would not go down quietly, scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Christian Ketchup led off the inning with a walk and then stole second base to get into scoring position.  Avery Mahon singled to center field to move Ketchup to third base and bring John Garrett up to bat.  Garrett hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring Ketchup home and make the score 5-3.

Mount Olive scored five more runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 10-3 run lead over Southern Wesleyan.  They held the Warriors to that until the bottom of the eighth inning.  John Garrett led off the inning with a double to left field and then DiMarkus Sanders walked to put two runners on the base pads.  Alec Hrynda followed with a single to right field to bring Garrett home and score the last run for the Warriors.  The Trojans won the final game of the series in 10-4.

 

What's Next

The Warriors will remain at home on April 11 to take on Toccoa Falls and on April 12 to take on Brevard.  They will then travel to Barton to take on the Bulldogs in a three game Conference Carolinas match-up on April 14 and 15.
