Warriors Fall to Crusaders in Conference Play

Central, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan falls in doubleheader Conference Carolinas action against the North Greenville Crusaders on Thursday evening.  The Warriors lost game one 7-0, before falling in game two 6-1.

Southern Wesleyan's Natalie Johnson and Alex Oliver posted the lone hits for the Warriors.  Maddie Ward contributed a sacrifice bunt, and Becca White completed a solo double play in the loss.  Josie Edwards started game one for the Warriors.  Natalie Johnson came in to pitch in relief for Southern Wesleyan.  Johnson went five innings while striking out one batter and allowing five hits.

The Warriors posted three hits in game two.  Senior Sara Sweatt led the team with two hits, and Becca White posted the third hit of the game.  Shelby Stroud contributed a sacrifice bunt and Sweatt stole a base during the game.  Sweatt drove in the lone RBI of the game, and White had the lone run.  Southern Welseyan had two walks during the game.  Hunter Hoskins pitched game two of the series and allowed 10 hits while striking out one batter.

How It Happened

Game One:

 The Crusaders struck first in game one of the doubleheader, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning.  North Greenville lengthened their lead to 5-0 in the top of the third, and went on to win game one 7-0 after scoring two more runs in the top of the fifth inning.

 

Game Two:

North Greenville struck first again in game two of the series, scoring one run in the top of the third inning.  They went on to lengthen their lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning.

Southern Wesleyan countered in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Becca White reached first base on a bunt single.  White advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shelby Stroud.  With White on second base, Sara Sweatt singled down the right field line to bring White home and score the lone run for the Warriors.

A four run rally by the North Greenville Crusaders in the top of the seventh gave them a 6-1 victory over the Warriors.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain at Varsity Field on April 21 to take on the Claflin Panthers in their final home game of the series.  The Warriors will celebrate their seven seniors at the conclusion of the game.  Southern Wesleyan will then travel to Erskine to take on the Flying Fleet on April 22 in their final games of regular season play.
