Coach Gillespie Says…

"Tough losses today, especially the second game of doubleheader.  We pitched well and played some outstanding defense all day.  It's tough to come back after a loss like that, but we must regroup and get ready to finish the series tomorrow.  The guys battled all day and played hard, making the loss even tougher, but we need to show some resiliency and bounce back."

How It Happened

Game One:

The Bulldogs struck first one a home run by Troy Maslowski to give them a 1-0 lead over the Warriors.  However, the Warriors countered in the top of the third inning to tie the game at one.  Andrew Falgiano led off the inning with a single up the middle and then advance to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Christian Ketchup.  Falgiano went on to advance to third when John Garrett grounded out to shortstop.  DiMarkus Sanders reached first on a walk.  With runners on the corners, Julio Justo singled through the left side to bring Falgiano home and tie the game 1-1.

Barton countered in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead.  Southern Wesleyan would not go down quietly as they tied the game again in the top of the fourth inning.  Alec Hrynda led off with a double to left center and then Quinton Bent was put on first base when he was hit by a pitch.  A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position and bring Jason Moldenhauer up to bat.  Moldenhauer hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Hrynda home and tie the game at two.

The Bulldogs took a 3-2 run lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Warriors countered in the top of the seventh.  John Garrett reached first on a single to left center and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by DiMarkus Sanders before stealing third base.  With Garrett on third, Julio Justo walked.  A throwing error by the catch allowed Garrett to come home and score the third run for the Warriors, tying the game for the third time that day.  In the bottom of the seventh inning, Troy Maslowski hit his second home run of the game to win the game for the Bulldogs in a 4-3 final.

Game Two:

The Bulldogs scored first in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead over the Warriors.  They went to lengthen their lead in the bottom of the fourth when a double by Blake Spangeberg brought a run home to give them a 2-0 lead.

However, Southern Wesleyan countered in the top of the fifth inning to take the lead.  Steven Perez led off the fifth inning with a walk and then advanced to third on a double by Christian Ketchup.  Izzy Martinez hit into a fielder's choice with a bunt that get Perez out at home, but advanced Ketchup to third.  A wild pitch brought Martinez home to put the Warriors down 2-1 to the Bulldogs.  Avery Mahon reached first on a fielder's choice, and then a fielder's choice by John Barrett brought Martinez home and moved Mahon to second base.  With the game tied at two, Quinton Bent hit a double to right center field to bring both Garrett and Mahon home for Southern Wesleyan to take a 4-2 lead over Barton.  Alec Hrynda followed with a single to right field to bring Bent home and end the inning with the Warriors having a 5-2 lead over the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs countered in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run home run by Calvin Hawke to put them down 5-4.  Barton on went on to win the game 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning on a home run by Andrew Webster and a single by Ricks Dearing.
