Warriors Split Against Saints

Central, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan splits March 25 double header against the Limestone College Saints.  The Warriors won game one in a final of 6-5, but fell in game two in a final of 5-2.

Southern Wesleyan posted 10 hits in the win over the Saints.  Julio Justo led the Warriors in hits, going four for four in the afternoon including a double and a home run.  Justo went on to lead Southern Wesleyan in RBIs with three.  Three Warriors were walked during the game.  Jason Moldenhauer stole a base during the game.  Josh Antwine started game one of the Warriors, allowing five hits and four runs while striking out five batters to get his second win of the season.  Jarrett Joyner finished up game one to get his second save of the season.

The Warriors posted eight hits in the game two loss to the Saints.  Three Warriors posted two hits in the loss, and DiMarkus Sanders and Julio Justo both posted RBIs.  Izzy Martinez had a double and Julio Justo hit his second home run of the day.  John Garrett and Sanders both posted a stolen base during the loss.  JJ Julian started game two and went 7.0 innings while allowing three runs and eight hits while striking out eight batters.

How It Happened

Game One:

Southern Wesleyan struck first in game one.  John Garrett walked  to lead off the bottom of the first inning and advanced to second on a ground out by DiMarkus Sanders.  Julio Justo singled through the right side to move Garrett to third base and bring Conner Ewing up to bat.  Ewing singled through the left side to bring Garrett home and give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

The Warriors lengthened their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on a home run by Julio Justo to take a 2-0 lead.  However, the Saints countered in the top of the sixth on a grand slam home run by Whetsell to give Limestone a 4-2 lead.

However, the Warriors fought back in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Andrew Falgiano led off the inning with a single and then advanced to second on a passed ball.  Izzy Martinez followed Falgiano to reach base on a walk.  With runners on first and second, John Garrett singled down the left field line to bring Falgiano home.  DiMarkus Sanders followed with a single to bring Martinez home and moved Garrett to third base.  Julio Justo doubled down the left field line to bring Garrett and Sanders home to give the Warriors a 6-4 lead over the Saints.  The Saints put one more run on the board before the end of the game, but the Warriors won game one in a final score of 6-5.

 

Game Two:

Southern Wesleyan struck first in game two of the afternoon in the bottom of the third inning.  Izzy Martinez led off the inning with a double into center field and then advanced to third on a single by John Garrett.  Garrett moved into scoring position after stealing second base to bring DiMarkus Sanders to the plate.  Sanders singled through the right side to bring Martinez home to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead in game two.

However, the Saints countered in the top of the fourth to tie the game at one on a home run by Strovink.  They took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a single by Allen to bring Etheridge home.  A home run by Banks in the top of the sixth allowed the Saints to take a 3-0 lead.

Julio Justo put another run on the board for the Warriors in the bottom of the eighth inning when he hit his second home run of the game.  However, the home run was not enough as the Saints won game two in a final score of 5-2.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will begin a week away next week.  They will travel to Mars Hill to take on the Lions on March 28 and then to North Georgia to take on the NightHawks on March 29.  The Warriors will then travel to King to take on the Tornado in a three game Conference Carolinas series on March 31 and April 1.
