Warriors Win First Conference Game of Season in Split Doubleheader

Central, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan splits against Mount Olive in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon.  The Warriors won game one 13-1 before falling in game two in a final score of 11-3.

Southern Wesleyan produced thirteen hits in the first game of competition in the after.  Senior Lizzie Fela led the team in hits with three hits, followed by Sara Sweatt, Becca White, and Maddie Ward with two each. Four Warriors posted a double and Sweatt hit a triple during the game.  Ward led the Warriors in RBI's with a total of four in the victory.  She was followed by Sweatt with three, and White with two.  Gibby Donald and Ward were the only two Warriors who stole a bases in the game with one steal each.  Natalie Johnson started for the Warriors and pitched a complete game while striking out one and allowing only one run in her first win of the season.

Sara Sweatt, Lizzie Fela, and Tiffany Cathey led the Warriors for game two in hits with one hit each. Fela hit a 2-run home run making it her seventh of the season. She also led the team in RBI's with all three runs batted in during the game.  Josie Edwards and Hunter Hoskins both pitched for the Warriors allowing a combined 12 hits.

How It Happened

Game One

The Trojans struck first in game one, scoring a run on an error to take a 1-0 lead.  However, the Warriors were quick to retaliate in the bottom of the third.  Becca White was hit by a pitch to take first and then moved on to second on a single by Lizzie Fela.  Alex Oliver singled to the shortstop to load the bases for Lexi Thompson.  White came home to score when Mount Olive walked Thompson to bring Maddie Ward up to bat.  Ward doubled to right center to send Fela, Oliver, and Thompson home to give Southern Wesleyan a 4-1 lead.  Kali Berrigan came to the plate and hit a single that sent Ward home.  Tiffany Cathey singled to left field to put runners at first and second with senior Sara Sweatt up to bat.  Sweatt hit her fifth triple of the season to bring both Cathey and Berrigan home.  White would bat for the second time of the inning and hit a single to bring Sweatt home.  Fela would then double to center field to score White and take a 9-1 lead.

The Warriors struck again in the bottom of the fourth.  Lexi Thompson reached third after a double and an advance on an error.  Maddie Ward singled to left field, scoring Thompson.  Hunter Hoskins walked and then Gibby Donald came in to pinch run for the first baseman.  Donald and Ward would each steal a base and then Ward would advance to home on an error to give the Warriors an 11-1 lead.  Sara Sweatt hit a double to bring Donald home.  Becca White singled to bring Sweatt home. The Warriors would win game one on the run rule in a final score of 13-1

 

Game Two

The Trojans started game two off strong in the first inning, scoring on an error and a single to give them a 2-0 lead over Southern Wesleyan.  The Trojans scored again in the top of the second and third to give them an 11-0 lead over the Warriors.

The Warriors challenged in the bottom of the third inning.  Tiffany Cathey led off with a single to center field and then advanced to second on a passed ball.  Sara Sweatt grounded out to move Cathey to third base.  Becca White walked to put two runners on for Lizzie Fela.  Fela hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring Cathey home. 

In the bottom of the fifth, Lizzie Fela came up to bat with Becca White on base and hit a two-run homerun.  Mount Olive would win game two in a final score of 11-3.

 
 

What's Next

The Warriors are at Varsity Field on Thursday March 23 when they take on the Limestone Saints at 4 and 6. They play at Varsity Field again on Saturday March 25 at 1 and 3 when they play the Converse Valkyries.
