Southern Wesleyan Falls to Truett-McConnell

Central, S.C. – The Warriors fell short in double-header action on Monday against the Truett-McConnell Bears.  Southern Wesleyan fell 10-2 in the five-inning first game, and 8-2 in the second game of the evening.

Two Warriors posted hits in the loss on Monday.  Alex Oliver led the team with two hits.  Oliver and Kali Berrigan each had a run.  Oliver and Lizzie Fela were the lone Warriors to post RBIs in the loss.  Sara Sweatt contributed with a sacrifice bunt.  Lucy Wolff started the game for the Warriors, allowing seven hits and runs in the loss.

Four Warriors posted hits in the loss.  Sara Sweatt led the team with three hits.  Sweatt drove in two runs to get two RBIs in the loss.  Amber Belk and Natilie Johnson each had a run in the game.  Lizzie Fela posted a double and Sweatt posted a triple in their at bats.  Sweatt also had a stolen base during the game.  Hunter Hoskins started game two for the Warriors, going 5.1 innings and allowing six runs.

"We had some tough losses today.  It is very important that we start to complete games.  We started out strong, but let a few key plays get away from us today.  Our focus for this week is to reset and turn our attention to our games this weekend."

 

 

How It Happened

Game One

Truett-McConnell struck first in the top of the second inning.  Darley singled and then moved on to second base on a single by Morrison.  Dunaway was then hit by a pitch to allow Darley and Morrison to move forward.  On a single by Wilson, Dunway and Morrison both advance, but Darley was out at home.  Horne tripled to clear the bases and give the Bears a 3-0 lead.  The Bears lead included to 4-0 on a single by Hay to bring Horne home.  A doubled by Sullivan brought Hay across home to end the inning.

Truett-McConnell scored five more runs in the top of the third inning to give them a 10-0 lead over the Warriors.  Southern Wesleyan rallied in the bottom of the third.  Kali Berrigan walked and then was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sara Sweatt.  Alex Oliver singled and advanced on the throw to allow Berrigan to come home.  Lizzie Fela then singled to allow Oliver to score.  The Warriors were kept at two runs the rest of the game to allow the Bears to win game one 10-2.

 

Game Two

Southern Wesleyan struck first in the bottom of the second inning of the second game of the afternoon.  With two out, Amber Belk walked and then advanced to second on a passed ball.  Natalie Johnson then walked.  Sara Sweatt hit a triple to left field to move both Johnson and Belk around to score.

The Warriors kept the Bears scoreless until the top of the fourth.  Wilson singled and then Horne singled.  A single by Sullivan brought Horne and Wilson to come around to score to give the Bears a 3-2 lead over the Warriors.  Truett-McConnell went on to score five more runs this inning to win the game 8-2.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will next play at Varsity Field on Saturday, February 25.  They will then travel for the first time of the season to take on Brevard College on March 3 and Tusculum on March 4.
