Warriors Rally in Ninth Inning to Down Lions

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga.- Southern Wesleyan scored eight runs in the top of the ninth inning in its 13-11 win against Emmanuel.

The Warriors (13-28, 3-19 CC) scored two runs in the top of the first for an early two-run lead. The Lions (5-35, 3-19 CC) gained the lead as they scored four runs in the bottom of the first for a 4-2 lead. Trevor Walker singled to drive in Luke Hostetler in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to one run. Emmanuel added another run in the bottom of the fifth. Hostetler singled to drive in Brad Bisko and Hostetler later scored on an error by the second baseman to tie the game at 5-5 in the top of the sixth. The Lions responded by scoring one run in the sixth, four runs in the seventh, and one run in the eighth to give them an 11-5 lead heading into the ninth inning.

In the top of the ninth, DiMarkus Sanders led off the inning by reaching base on an error by the shortstop. Avery Mahon and Matt Costa both hit singles to load the bases with no outs. Conner Ewing singled to score Sanders to cut the lead to four runs. Emmanuel then walked Bisko to score another run and keep the bases loaded. The next batter for the Warriors struck out to give them one out in the inning. Hostetler grounded out to score Costa to cut the deficit to three runs.

John Garrett then reached base on an error by the second baseman and Ewing scored off of the error. Walker followed that up with a single to score Bisko to cut the lead to one run. Walker and Garrett pulled off a double steal to score Garrett which tied the game at 11-11. Sanders came up to bat again at the top of the order and reached base again on an error by the shortstop. Mahon drove Sanders and Walker in with a double to give Southern Wesleyan a 13-11 lead.

The Warriors allowed a single in the first at-bat of the bottom of the ninth. With the tying run at the plate, Josh Core struck out three straight batters to clinch the victory for Southern Wesleyan.

Mahon went 3-for-6 with two RBIs, two runs, and a double. Ewing batted 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Hostetler went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs.

Core (1-7) picked up the win as he pitched one inning, allowed one hit, and had three strikeouts. The Warriors pitching staff combined to strike out nine batters.

Southern Wesleyan will close out their three-game series with Emmanuel tomorrow April 16 with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
