Warriors Fall to Lions in Extra Innings

MARS HILL, N.C.- Southern Wesleyan left 15 runners on base in its 7-6 loss to Mars Hill in 11 innings.

The Warriors (8-12) scored four runs in the top of the first inning. The Lions (15-8) scored one run in the bottom of the first. Matt Costa hit his first homerun of the season with a two-run homerun in the top of the second as Southern Wesleyan stretched their lead to five runs. Mars Hill added one run in the bottom of the fifth and three runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to one run. They tied the game in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings.

In the top of the tenth, the Warriors put two runners on base as Costa walked and Devin Patrick hit a single. The next two batters struck out to strand two runners on base. The Lions were able to put one runner on base in the bottom of the inning, but Southern Wesleyan forced three straight outs to keep the game going. The Warriors went three up and three down in the top of the 11th inning. In the bottom of the 11th, Southern Wesleyan walked the first batter in the inning. He then stole second to give Mars Hill a runner in scoring position. He scored off of an error by the Warriors to give the Lions the victory.

Costa went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs, and a homerun. Julio Justo went 1-for-5 with two runs.

Southern Wesleyan next travels to Limestone for a three-game series March 11-12.
