Warriors Drop Doubleheader to Flying Fleet

DUE WEST, S.C.- Southern Wesleyan left 13 runners on base in its 11-1 and 6-5 losses to Erskine in its Conference Carolinas opener.

In game one, the Flying Fleet (15-7, 6-0 CC) score eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and one run in the bottom of the second for a 9-0 lead. The Warriors (11-13, 0-2 CC) scored their only run of the game in the top of the third as Shelby Stroud hit her first homerun of the season. Erskine added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Southern Wesleyan loaded the bases in the top of the fifth, but they were unable to score to seal the win for the Flying Fleet.

In game two, the Warriors got on the board first as Lizzie Fela hit a solo homerun in the top of the second. Allison Barbee stretched the lead to two runs with a solo homerun of her own in the top of the fourth. Erskine scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 2-2. Neither team put a runner on base in the seventh inning to send the game to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Southern Wesleyan scored three runs off of a double by Fela that drove in Barbee, Sara Sweatt, and Jessica Carnes. The Flying Fleet cut the deficit to two runs with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth with one out. The Warriors forced the next batter to groundout for two outs and the tying run at home plate. Erskine then tied the game with a two-run homerun to extend the game. Both teams were able to move a baserunner to third base, but they were unable to drive them in during the ninth inning. Southern Wesleyan was again able to move a baserunner to third base in the top of the tenth, but could not drive them in. The Flying Fleet won the game with a walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth on their first at-bat of the inning.

Fela went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, one run, a double, and a homerun. Barbee batted 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI, a double, and a homerun.

The Warriors next host Limestone in their Conference Carolinas home opener March 15 with a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
