Box Score CENTRAL, S.C.- Southern Wesleyan scored three or more runs in four different innings in its 17-7 win over Truett-McConnell.
The Warriors (4-0) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning as Matt Costa singled to drive in John Garrett and DiMarkus Sanders while Justin Brew singled to left field to drive in Costa. The Bears (0-5) scored one run in the top of the second. Costa drove in another run in the bottom of the second as he singled to centerfield and scored Avery Mahon. Truett-McConnell scored three runs in the top of the third to tie the game. Southern Wesleyan responded in the bottom of the fourth by scoring three runs as Garrett doubled to drive in Sanders, Costa hit a triple to drive in Garrett, and Luke Hostetler singled to drive in Costa.
The Warriors added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Sanders was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in Justin Brew, Garrett hit a single that drove in Carson Davis, and Costa singled to drive in Mahon. They added four more runs in the sixth and eighth innings to stretch their lead to 13 runs. The Bears scored three runs in the top of the ninth to cut the deficit to nine.
Costa went 5-for-6 with seven RBIs, three runs scored, and a triple. Garrett hit 4-for-5 with three RBIs, and three runs scored. Sanders went 1-for-2 with four runs scored and one RBI.
Andrew Howard (1-0) started the game and pitched five innings, allowed four runs off of six hits, and had six strikeouts.
Southern Wesleyan next travels to Anderson Feb. 10 for a 3 p.m. game.
