Warriors Sweep Doubleheader Against Eagles

CENTRAL, S.C.- Matt Costa went 6-for-12 with four RBIs, two runs scored, and the game-winning hit in the second game of the doubleheader as Southern Wesleyan swept Toccoa Falls 7-3 and 1-0.

In game one, the Warriors (3-0) scored twice in the bottom of the second inning. Costa drove in DiMarkus Sanders with a single to first base and Justin Brew drove in Costa with a single to centerfield. They stretched their lead to three runs in the bottom of the fourth as Brew scored off of a sacrifice fly by Carson Davis. The Eagles (0-3) scored off of a fielder's choice in the top of the fifth. Luke Hostetler drove in Costa and Sanders with a triple to centerfield and Zach Mondoux singled to drive in Hostetler in the bottom of the fifth. Toccoa Falls scored again in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to four runs. Costa drove in another run with a single up the middle in the bottom of the sixth. The Warriors only allowed one run in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.

Sanders went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Costa went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Brew hit 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

Tyler Rio (1-0) started the game, pitched 6.0 innings, allowed two runs off of three hits, and had three strikeouts.

In game two, Southern Wesleyan had three hits and left three runners on base while Toccoa Falls had three hits and left six runners on base in the first seven innings of the game to send the game to extra innings. It would take seven more innings to decide the outcome of the game as the Eagles had three hits and left three runners on base and the Warriors had four hits and left four runners on base in those seven extra innings. In the bottom of the 14th inning, Costa ended the game with a walk-off single up the middle that drove in John Garrett.

Four different pitchers pitched for Southern Wesleyan with Hamilton Hartsell (1-0) picking up the win as he pitched two innings, allowed no hits or runs, and had three strikeouts. The Warriors struck out 12 batters in the game.

Southern Wesleyan next hosts Truett-McConnell Feb. 9 at 4 p.m.
