Box Score CENTRAL, S.C.- Southern Wesleyan allowed six runs in the seventh inning in its 9-7 loss to the University of Virginia-Wise.
The Warriors (5-5) struck first as Trey Matthews singled to drive in Luke Hostetler in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Cavaliers (3-1) responded with two runs in the top of the fifth. Southern Wesleyan regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth as they scored four runs to take a 5-2 lead. The University of Virginia-Wise took the lead again in the top of the seventh as they scored six runs. They added another run in the top of the eighth to give themselves a four-run lead. The Warriors scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to cut the deficit to two runs as Julio Justo drove in Devin Patrick on a sacrifice fly and Connor Ewing singled to centerfield and drove in Hostetler. Matthews reached first base on the next at-bat, but Ewing was thrown out at second base to end the game.
Matt Costa went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and one run. Patrick batted 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run. Ewing went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run.
J.J. Julian started the game, pitched 5.0 innings, allowed two runs off of two hits, and had four strikeouts.
Southern Wesleyan will finish up their three-game series against the University of Virginia-Wise tomorrow Feb. 20 with a doubleheader that starts at 12 p.m. The Warriors will also be hosting their first Kid's Day of the season, where all kids 12 and under will receive free admission, free drink, free gift courtesy of Palmetto Pizza of Central and have the chance to take the field with the Warriors for the National Anthem. Kids interested in taking the field with the team for the National Anthem should be present no later than 11:50am.
