Warriors Win Sixth Game of the Season

Box Score

Warriors win sixth game of the season against the Mount Olive Trojans.

The Warriors came into the game ready to make some moves against the Trojans of Mount Olive and to support their four Seniors in their last home game of regular season play.  While Mount Olive put eight shots on goal in the first half of the game, Courtney McNeill was able to defend the goal from the opposing Trojans.  The Warriors raised the intensity in the second half of the first period of play.  Kayla Doyle scored the first goal of the game for the Warriors, her fifth goal of the season.  That was only the beginning as Doyle passed the ball to Marla Burgos who shot it into the goal scoring the second goal for the Warriors and giving them a 2-0 lead at the half.

The energy did not drop in the second half.  The Trojans were able to get a goal around the Warrior defense to score a goal, however.  The Warriors were determined not to let another through and stepped up their defense.  The defenders, led by senior captain Leah Moorefield, were able to keep the Trojans from scoring a second goal, giving them their sixth victory of the regular season.

McNeill contributed with five saves in the win.  The Warriors took a total of 10 shots on goal during the game, and Doyle gained her eighth assist of the season.

"So proud of this team," said Head Women's Soccer Coach Corey Morrell.  He continued, "It wasn't pretty today, we never got in rhythm but we fought hard for our seniors and we are thrilled with the result to send them out with a win in their last home game!"

The win for the Warriors makes their season record come to 6-10-1 and 4-6-1 in Conference Carolinas competition after their win.  The University of Mount Olive Trojans becomes 5-7-2 and 3-6-2 in Conference play.

The day started with a ceremony to recognize and celebrate the careers of the four Seniors on the Women's team.  Grace Taylor, a Psychology major from Cartagena, Colombia, was the leading scorer for SWU for the past seasons and was nominated for the NCCAA South Region First Team.  Leah Moorefield, a double major in Biology and Chemistry from Charleston, SC, was named team captain for her senior season and has made numerous all conference academic awards.  Erin Exline, a Business Administration major with a minor in Sports Management from Wilmington, NC, has not only helped anchor the Warrior defense for four years, but has made Deans List Honors for five of her six semesters at Southern Wesleyan.  Tadala Kandulu, a Business major from Blantyre, Malawi, has earned Deans List Honors and also plays tennis for the Warriors' Women's Tennis.
