Box Score CENTRAL, S.C. - The Southern Wesleyan men's soccer team, ranked No. 5 in this week's NSCAA NCCAA poll, played to a double overtime 1-1 draw against King on Wednesday night. The game was the first conference matchup for the Warriors who move to 3-1-1 on the season and 0-0-1 in Conference Carolinas. The Tornado move to 2-2-1 on the season and 0-1-1 in the conference.
The game was intense and back and forth throughout. Sebastian Castro put the Warriors on the board with 36 seconds left in the first half off of a Sam Rowden assist. The goal was the third of the year for Castro, a sophomore midfielder. The Warriors would take the 1-0 lead into the half.
In the 76th minute of the game, the Tornado got on the board and evened the score with a goal from Ryan Murphy. Murphy's goal came off a free kick and was just out of the reach of Southern Wesleyan goalkeeper Ruben Rodriguez. Minutes after the Tornado goal, Warrior senior midfielder Juan Aguedelo received his second yelllow card of the game, forcing a red card and forcing Calderon out of the game. The Warriors played the last 15 minutes regulation with only 10 players.
Regulation would end with the two teams tied 1-1. The two overtime periods resulted in a few close chances for both teams, but ultimately neither team scored. With four minutes to go in the game Ivan Malagon was issued a red card and the Warriors were forced to play with an additional man down.
Southern Wesleyan outshot King 19-10. Both teams had six corners. Rodriguez had five saves in 110 minutes played in goal.
"I'm very happy with the way we played," said head coach Camilo Rodriguez. "However, I'm disappointed with the result and the red cards. I give a lot of credit to King for making it such a great game. Our boys never quit and I'm proud of them for that. Now, we just have to rest and get ready for another tough match on the road."
The Warriors return to action Saturday at Lees-McRae. Lees-McRae is 2-2 entering the matchup, coming off a 3-2 loss to Lincoln Memorial. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. following the women's matchup at 3 p.m. Follow @SWUMensSoccer for updates.
