Warriors Win 3rd Straight, Knock Off Anderson 8-3

CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan baseball made it two wins in two days with an 8-3 victory over Anderson at Connor Field. The Warriors have won three in a row and five of their last six.

The Warriors scored early and often against the Trojans on Wednesday night, leading 4-0 after two inning and 5-1 after four. The win is the first in three games against Anderson on the season with the fourth coming in two weeks.

Johnny Ponder collected three hits as Michael Hyman and Justin Brew had two each for the Warriors. Brew drove in four on the night as Hyman scored three times. Ponder collected two RBIs. The Trojans committed six errors which led to five unearned runs.

The Warriors scored first in the first as Hyman scored on a sacrifice fly from Brew. Hyman led off the inning with a single and stole second; he moved to third on the throwing error by catcher Travis Smith. Brew was in the mix again in the second, knocking in three with a bases loaded double down the left field line.

Anderson got on the board in the third but left two on. The Trojans stranded 13 on base in the game, the Warriors left nine on base. Anderson added two in the sixth to cut the Warriors lead to 5-3 as Nick Bernardo tripled in a run and then scored on Garret Bailey's single.

The Warriors added their fifth run in the fourth as John Garrett singled and later scored on an error after Brew's single to left. In the sixth the Warriors retook control after Anderson made it 5-3, scoring three times to take a commanding 8-3 lead.

SWU sent eight to the plate in the sixth as Hyman got the inning started with a double to left center. After two outs, Lara singled in Hyman and later scored on a single from Ponder. The Warriors at-bat was prolonged by another Trojan error. Anderson left the bases loaded in the seventh as the Warriors struck out six straight times in their final two at-bats.

Kalin Smith earned the win for the Warriors with two innings of relief duty. Smith tossed two innings, allowing two hits and two unearned runs. He struck out one and walked one in improving to 3-2 on the season. Hamilton Hartsell started and pitched four innings, allowing seven hits and one run. He struck out three. Cody Sheffield took the loss for the Trojans after pitching three innings and giving up four hits and five runs, only two earned.

The Warriors will turn their attention back to conference action, hosting Limestone for a three-game series starting on Friday at 4 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m.
