Warriors Split with Barton on Dramatic Finishes

WILSON, N.C. – After securing a comeback extra inning win in game one, the Warriors missed out on the sweep as Barton hit a walk off two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh in game two. The Warriors came back in game one to win 4-3 in 10 innings before Barton took game two 8-7.

The Warriors and Bulldogs will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.

Game One
The Warriors battled back out of a 2-1 hole to win 4-3 in 10 innings against the Bulldogs in game one. SWU jumped on top in the first inning as Dan Williams drove home Mike Hyman with one of his three hits in the game.

The Warriors led 1-0 until the third when Barton scored twice. SWU chipped away to tie the game 2-2 in the fifth as Hyman tripled home Johnny Ponder. SWU took the lead in the sixth as Julio Lara picked up an RBI with a single through the infield to score Josh Shimp who led off the inning with a base hit.

Barton forced extras with a run in the 7th, piecing together three hits in the inning. In the 10th, Shimp belted his third homer of the season to lead off the inning. In the bottom of the inning the Bulldogs put the tying and winning run in scoring position but Kalin Smith struck out Andrew Webster to end the game.

Smith picked up the win to even his record at 2-2 with two innings of one-hit baseball. The senior struck out two and didn't walk a batter. Matt Buss got the start and pitched six innings, striking out seven and giving up five hits. He allowed two unearned runs and walked two.

Game Two
Mitchell Wheeler hit a walk-off two-run homer to give Barton an 8-7 win over the Warriors in the night cap. SWU took the lead in the fifth after trailing 5-0 through three.

The Warriors scored three times in the fourth and four more in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead. The Bulldogs added a run in the bottom of the fifth before Wheeler hit the game-winning homer in the bottom of the 7th with two outs.

All seven of the Warriors hits came in the fourth or fifth inning as seven different players recorded a hit. Five hits came in the fifth as Justin Brew led off the frame with his first career four bagger. Josh Shimp followed with a double before he scored on a single by Daniel Coleman to make it 5-5. Matt Costa and John Garrett both had run-scoring hits in the inning as well.

The Warriors first got on the board in the fourth thanks to miscues by the Bulldogs. Shimp reached on an error and moved into scoring position on a passed ball. After Daniel Coleman reached on a wild pitch strike three, Julio Lara picked up the RBI with a double down the right field line. Matt Costa walked to load the bases before Johnny Ponder drove in two with a single up the middle.

Paschal Ammons picked up the win (1-0) after striking out five in 2.1 innings of work for the Bulldogs. Mike Batten (0-4) took the loss in relief after pitching 3.2 innings. He allowed four hits, three walks and three runs. The righty struck out five.
