Buss strikes out career best 12 as Warriors take finale 13-2

Box Score

CENTRAL, S.C. – Matt Buss struck out a career-high 12 as the Warriors won their second in a row to close out the 2015 season, defeating Truett-McConnell 13-2 on Wednesday night at Connor Field.

Mike Hyman and Daniel Williams backed Buss with two hits a piece including a home run from each. Hyman led off the bottom of the first with his second four-bagger of the season, a no-doubter over the left center field fence. Williams also played long ball in the eighth, hitting a three-run bomb to right, part of a five-run inning.

Buss was the story on this night, shutting down the Bears and limiting them to just two runs, one earned over 7.1 innings. He walked just one and allowed seven hits. Two of those hits were of the infield variety in the third which in addition to an error led to the first run for TMC. A leadoff double by Tate Gaines in the fourth followed later by a single from McLaine Ramey provided the only other run in the game for the Bears.

Buss retired the final 11 batters he faced including three straight strikeouts. Buss fanned two in the second, sixth and seventh innings and struck out the side in the first.

After Hyman's lead off blast in the first the Warriors added two more runs as Johnny Ponder singled home Julio Lara and Daniel Williams who both walked.  Wade Metcalf drove in two in the third as the Warriors scored three times that inning. Matt Costa also knocked in a run with a sac fly in the inning.

Hyman manufactured a run in each of the second and sixth innings using his legs. He reached first via a walk in the second and promptly stole second. After moving to third on a groundout, he scored on a wild pitch. In the sixth he beat out an infield single before moving to second on a wild pitch. After stealing third, he scored despite the infield playing in as Julio Lara bounced out to third as the throw from first was not in time.

Williams capped off the scoring in the eighth with his third bomb of the season as Charlie Creighton and Lara both scored. Lara singled in a pair earlier in the inning after Metcalf and John Garrett reached to begin the inning. Garret had one of his two hits in the game in the eighth.

The Warriors wrap the season at 16-32, 6-21 in their first season in Conference Carolinas.
