BRISTOL, Tenn. – Southern Wesleyan baseball dropped a pair of games to King on Thursday afternoon, falling 28-3 in game one and 4-1 in game two.
The third and final game of the series is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start on Friday. That game will wrap up the conference slate for the Warriors, their first in Conference Carolinas. The Warriors are scheduled to close out the season next week with a game at Anderson on Monday at home against Truett-McConnell on Wednesday.
Game One
The Warriors scored three in the top of the first but King answered in the bottom of the inning in a big way. The Tornado put up 11 runs in the first as they collected 28 in the game, winning 28-3.
Mike Hyman started off the game with a single up the middle and promptly stole second, his 37th of the season and 86th in his career. Hyman now is just two shy of tying the school mark and three from holding the career record in addition to the season record he already set this season.
After a fly out, Hyman scored as Julio Lara singled through the left side. The next batter, Dan Williams, clubbed his second home run of the season and the week, a two-run shot to right to put the Warriors up 3-0.
King answered with 11 runs in the first, sending 15 batters to the plate. The Tornado added two runs in the second, six in the third and five in the fourth before the Warriors hung a zero in the fifth. King scored four more in the seventh.
The Warriors committed three errors in the game, leading to eight unearned runs. Hamilton Hartsell took the loss, falling to 0-8 on the season.
Game Two
The Tornado scored three times in the first, taking game two 4-1. The Warriors collected seven hits but left seven men on base, scoring their lone run in the sixth inning.
Mike Hyman collected three hits including a double and score the lone run for SWU. Hyman beat out an infield single in the sixth before scoring on an RBI single by Dan Williams. Hyman doubled to lead off the game but couldn't advance. He also singled in the seventh as the Warriors loaded the bases with one out. Justin Brew flied out to right which started a double play as Matt Costa was thrown out at the plate to end the game.
Senior Matt Buss fell to 3-5 on the season with a complete game effort. The lefty struck out four in six innings, giving up nine hits and four runs, three earned. The complete game was the second on the season for Buss. Alex Martin also tossed a complete game for King to pick up the win and improve to 4-4. He struck out seven in seven innings.
