CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan scored more runs than they have in five years on Sunday, hanging 23 on the board in a 23-8 win over Limestone at Connor Field.
The Warriors run total is the most since they scored 22 in a 22-17 win over Emmanuel back on April 9, 2010.
On Sunday the Warriors scored in seven of their eight at-bats and sent more than nine batters to the plate twice, in the second and the eighth. Limestone used seven pitchers in the game, only one didn't give up a run.
Mike Hyman got things started in the first with a leadoff walk. He promptly stole second and went to third on a throwing error by the catcher. The steal gives him the single-season school record at 34. Hyman scored two batters later on a sac fly from Julio Lara.
After Limestone scored twice in the second, the Warriors sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom half, scoring six times. Wade Metcalf and Justin Brew both drove home two in the inning with singles as the Warriors collected four hits in the inning.
The Saints closed the gap in the third with four runs to pull to within 7-6 but Chris Scura was called out on strikes to end the inning and was then ejected following the play. After heated debate a coach from Limestone was also ejected. From then on the Saints scored just two more runs while the Warriors put up 16 more.
Half of those 16 runs came in the eighth inning as the Warriors entered the inning with a 15-8 lead. Julio Lara doubled in a run and scored in his first at-bat of the inning before knocking home a run as he also reached on an error. Lara finished the game with three hits, two runs scored and five RBIs. He had a single, double and triple in the game.
Daniel Coleman also picked up an RBI single in the eighth, one of three hits for him on the day. He also scored three times. Johnny Ponder had a big day at the plate with four hits and four runs scored. He singled and scored in the eighth.
Jay Hale picked up a two-run double in his lone at-bat and later scored on a single by Mike Hyman. Hyman had three hits on the day and also scored three times. Drew Carson entered the game in the third but that didn't stop him from collecting two hits, two RBIs and scoring twice. He scored both of his runs in the wild eighth, one after a walk and another after a single.
The Warriors had a season-high 23 hits in the game as six players had at least two hits. Ten different players had an RBI and 11 scored in the game.
Kalin Smith tossed 3.1 innings of relief to get the win and improve to 4-2 on the season. Smith allowed just three hits and one run while striking out three.
The Warriors are scheduled to make a midweek trip to Milligan to play a doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 3 p.m. before finishing out the conference schedule next weekend at King (Tenn.). SWU closes out the year the following week at Anderson on April 20 and at home against Truett-McConnell on April 22.
