CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan baseball dropped a pair of games to Limestone to open the weekend series, snapping a three-game winning streak.
The Warriors lost 4-3 in game one before falling 14-3 in game two. The series finale will be played on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Game One
The Warriors committed five errors behind Matt Buss in dropping the first game of the series 4-3 to Limestone. Four of those five errors came in the second inning as the Saints scored all four of their runs in that inning. Buss allowed just five hits in the complete game but took the loss.
Limestone had just one hit in that four-run second, a run-scoring double from Chris Scura, but four infield errors contributed to three runners reaching and ultimately scoring in front of Scura. Another error later in the inning allowed the final two runs to score.
After that second inning Buss allowed just four base runners and none reached third. Buss finished the game with six strikeouts and two walks. None of the runs allowed were earned. Despite the solid outing, Buss took the loss to fall to 3-4.
The Warriors put together back-to-back hits in the third as John Garrett and Mike Hyman reached to get things started. A groundout from Dan Williams plated Garrett and a single to short by Julio Lara allowed Hyman to score. Hyman scored again in the fifth as Justin Brew doubled him home after Hyman reached after getting hit with a pitch.
Game Two
The Warriors fell behind early, trailing 4-1 after two but couldn't keep pace with the Saints, falling 14-3. Mike Hyman scored all three runs for the Warriors as the senior collected two hits. Matt Costa led the team with three hits including a double in the fourth. Dan Williams also collected a multi-hit game with a pair of singles. He also drove in all three runs.
SWU scored in the first as Williams knocked in Hyman after the center fielder walked and stole second. In the third he reached on an infield single and moved to second on an error before a pair of groundouts brought him home. In the fifth Hyman reached on an error and stole second, giving him 33 on the season which ties the school record set in 2005 by Brent Wiley. Hyman is just six steals shy of the school record of 88 currently held by Blake Honeycutt.
The Saints scored five runs in the fifth and three more in the eighth as they pulled away in the middle innings. James Deal delivered the big blow, a grand slam in the fifth. Garrett Lowery also hit a home run, a solo shot in the sixth.
Tyler Rio took the loss after tossing three innings, allowing eight hits and four runs. He walked two and struck out two. Jose Rondon struck out six in seven innings to improve to 3-6 after allowing just three runs, one earned.
