Warriors Upended in Series Opener at North Greenville

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan came up just short in the first of a three-game series against North Greenville on Friday afternoon, falling 3-2 to the Crusaders.

The Warriors got a solid pitching performances from all four pitchers despite the losing effort as starter Hamilton Hartsell tossed four innings, allowing just one run. The sophomore gave up five hits but walked just one. SWU allowed just three runs the first time they've held an opponent to three or fewer in three weeks.

The Crusaders got on the board first in the second inning with three hits including an RBI single by Wheeler Smith. North Greenville added a run off Kalin Smith in the fifth before the Warriors tied the game in the top of the sixth.

Dan Williams started the rally with a single to right field. Luke Hostetler followed with a walk and Julio Lara walked to load the bases. Johnny Ponder followed with a two-run single to center to tie the game at 2-2.

North Greenville responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning as an error allowed the go-ahead run to cross the plate. The Warriors put the tying run in scoring position in the ninth thanks to an error. With two outs Zach Mondoux reached on a throwing error by Wheeler Smith after a strikeout. After Mike Hyman walked, John Garrett lined out to end the game.

The Warriors managed just six hits in the game and committed four errors. Hyman added a single to go with his walk in the ninth. Luke Hostetler and Julio Lara added a hit and also reached on a walk while Daniel Coleman provided the lone extra base hit, a double to lead off the third.
