Warriors Drop Midweek Contest at Truett-McConnell

Box Score

CLEVELAND, Ga. – Southern Wesleyan baseball lost a midweek game to Truett-McConnell on Monday afternoon 12-6. The Warriors are scheduled to be back in action on Tuesday as they host Bluefield at 4 p.m.

The Bears put up six runs in the second to seize control of the game and lead 6-1. The Warriors added a run in the third and three in the fourth to pull to within 7-5 but the Bears added on with a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh as they took the season's first meeting 12-6. These two teams are scheduled to meet three more times with another trip to Cleveland at the end of the month and a doubleheader at Connor Field at the end of April.

The Warriors managed nine hits in the game, one more than TMC but all nine SWU hits were the single variety. The Bears had three extra base hits including a solo home run by Walker Caves in the third. The Warriors issued 11 walks in the contest while the Bears also struggled by giving out seven free passes.

Luke Hostetler led the way with three hits and also scored a run. Josh Shimp and Daniel Coleman each had two hits for the Warriors. Shimp also had one of the team's three RBI. Trevor Walker and Dan Williams also had an RBI. Drew Carson reached base three times on walks and scored twice.

Mike Batten made his first start since Feb. 10 after snow and rain postponed all midweek games over the last two weeks. The righty allowed seven runs over four innings to 0-2 on the season. Batten allowed five hits but walked six with just one strikeout.

Tuesday's scheduled game with Bluefield could get moved to later in the week due to rain. Keep up to date on the schedule by following SWU Athletics on Twitter at twitter.com/swuwarriors.
