Baseball Comes Up Short Against Anderson

Box Score

CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan surged but couldn't hold off Anderson on Wednesday night at Connor Field, falling 12-6.

The Warriors stormed back from a 4-0 hole to tie the game at 4-4 in the fifth. The first run came in on an error as Johnny Ponder crossed the plate after a single to start the inning. Josh Shimp knocked in a run with a sac fly before back-to-back doubles by Dan Williams and Luke Hostetler each brought home a run. That tied the game at 4-4 after five innings.

In the sixth the Trojans scored a run off of reliever Drew Carson to take the lead back, a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Anderson added four in the seventh and three in the ninth. The Warriors scored twice in the eighth to cut the lead to 9-6 and had the tying run at the plate but couldn't cash in.

Daniel Coleman scored in the eighth on a wild pitch before Mike Hyman beat out an infield single that allowed Johnny Ponder to score. Coleman pinch-hit earlier in the inning and singled to center before Ponder singled as well.

Josh Shimp picked up a pair of hits and knocked in a run. Ponder also had two hits and scored twice.

Michael Skelly picked up the win in relief for Anderson to improve to 1-2. Skelly tossed 1.1 perfect innings with two strikeouts. Drew Carson took the loss in relief of Mike Batten. Batten pitched five innings allowing four runs, three earned and striking out six. He only gave up two hits but walked seven. Carson pitched one inning allowing six hits and five runs.
