Warriors Fall to Nighthawks 9-5

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Southern Wesleyan baseball dropped another midweek contest on Tuesday, falling to North Georgia 9-5 at Bob Stein Stadium.

The Warriors took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Dan Williams singled home Mike Hyman who led off the game with a base hit. The Nighthawks responded with two in thesecond but the Warriors added four in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead.

The first three reached in the fourth for the Warriors as Julio Lara was plunked and Johnny Ponder singled to center. Luke Hostetler singled in a run, one of two times he reached in the game. Two straight walks to Matt Costa and John Garrett pushed across another run. Later in the inning Justin Brew reached on a fielder's choice as Hostetler scored. Costa scored on a throwing error on the play.

The Warriors held onto their lead at 5-3 after the fourth but a big blow off the bat of Andrew Gordon turned the tide for UNG. Gordon hit his second homer of the game, a three-run shot down the left field line to give the Nighthawks a 6-5 lead. UNG added three more in the seventh.

Andrew Howard got the start for the Warriors and tossed six innings, giving up 11 hits, six runs, two walks and striking out six. Howard takes the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year. Chris Cobb improved to 2-0 with a five inning effort out of the bullpen for the Nighthawks. Cobb allowed just three hits and struck out seven.

The Warriors will be back in action again on Wednesday, as they host Anderson in their second meeting of the season and first at The Con. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
