Warriors Out Muscled by Erskine in Saturday Twinbill

CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan baseball couldn't keep pace with Erskine on Saturday, losing both games in the double dip, 6-3 in game one and 14-5 in game two.

The final game of the three game series will be on Monday at 6 p.m. at Connor Field.

Game One
The Flying Fleet showed their muscle, hitting four home runs including one from Brandon Overstreet to lead off the first. Zach Smith hit two in the game for Erskine.

The Warriors responded in the bottom of the first as Justin Brew singled with one out and scored on a single from Dan Williams later in the inning. John Garrett beat out an infield single to start the third and later scored on an error from Overstreet. A groundball double play got Erskine out of the two-on one-out jam.

That 2-1 lead was the only lead the Warriors had in the game as Erskine scored three in the fourth. Smith led off the inning with his first homer of the day. Three batters later it was Sam Cothran hitting a two-run bomb that put Erskine up 4-2. Smith hit another homer in the fifth and scored in the seventh to put Erskine up 6-2.

SWU added a run in the bottom of the seventh as Luke Hostetler led off with a double and scored after Matt Costa grounded out. Hostetler was moving up to third on the play when Smith let loose an errant throw from first that allowed Hostetler to score.

Luke Crumley improved to 6-0 on the season for the Flying Fleet with a complete game effort. Crumley struck out nine and allowed seven hits. He walked one and gave up three runs, two were earned.

Matt Buss falls to 2-3 with the loss after tossing 6.2 innings. He allowed 10 hits and gave up six runs. He struck out nine and walked one.

Game Two
The Warriors got to Austin Gambrell, knocking out the righty in the third inning after scoring five times but Erskine hit three more homers to win 14-5.

Erskine scored twice on a single from Zach Smith in the first inning to take the early lead. In the second the Warriors scored four times on four hits and an error. Dan Williams started the inning with a double to center and scored two batters later on a single from Johnny Ponder. Luke Hostetler singled and Daniel Coleman walked to load the bases. After a strike out, Mike Hyman beat out an infield single to score another run. Justin Brew was hit by a pitch and Josh Shimp reached on an error as another run scored.

Another error helped lead to another run for the Warriors in the third as SWU took a 5-1 lead. John Garrett knocked home a run with a two-out single to right but Zach McAllister settled down after that to retire 15 in a row.

Erskine hit their first home run of the game in the fourth, a two-run shot by Destin Nichols to cut the Warriors lead down to 5-4. In the fifth Zach Smith hit a three-run homer, his third of the day, to give Erskine a 7-5 lead. The Flying Fleet added three more in the sixth, one in the seventh and three in the ninth as Overstreet hit his second homer of the day.

Hamilton Hartsell took the loss to fall to 0-6 on the year. Hartsell allowed eight hits and seven runs in five innings. Mike Batten tossed two innings in relief, allowing four hits and four runs, one earned. He struck out two and walked three. Roth Matthews also pitched two innings, allowing three hits and three runs.
